Hiring A Wedding Disc Jockey

By DJ Craig

A wedding DJ is unlike a club or radio jock. They must know the protocol of wedding receptions and be part coordinator, part party DJ and part Emcee.

A good wedding DJ must be prepared to anticipate and meet the demands of a Bride who has been planning for her big day for months and years, if not most of her life. It can be a pressure filled situation. After all the planning and money spent, if the DJ doesn't perform and make the party happen, it is a major disappointment.

Guests may not remember the cake, flowers or even the food. But great music and dancing or lack of it, is not easily forgotten.

Hiring a good wedding DJ takes some legwork and research. It is not a process that some put enough effort or thought into. Since most people don't hire pro DJs all the time, it is unfamiliar terrain. Learning how to hire the right DJ and what to watch for is the most important thing.

1. Meet your prospective DJ. Gage his communication skills, demeanor, verbal articulation, appearance, etc. Does he have a written format or plan for your reception? Does he meet with you before the wedding to go over all details?

2. Listen to his sound system. This is what your guests will be hearing all night long. Is it shrill, too bassy or warm and full? Does it look well maintained or worn and ratty?

3. Check out his experience and referrals. Does he carry liability insurance and back up equipment?

4. Ask him how he decides what song to play next. This often overlooked element is the key to a great party. Does he take requests, provide you a music list and constantly watch and respond to his dance floor? Does he build "sets" of music? Can he play all genres including Swing, Rock, R&B, Oldies and Slow songs?

5. Meet at least 3 DJs before you make any decisions. This will give you a good idea of what is available and a point of comparison.

You are now ready to make a decision on hiring your wedding DJ.

Doing your homework will pay off on your wedding day when your dance floor is full and your guests are creating their own happy memories!
